3. Death Stranding

There is no upcoming PS4 exclusive more shrouded in mystery than Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding, which despite being revealed at E3 2016 and having numerous subsequent story and gameplay unveilings, is still very much an unknown quantity.

In line with Kojima's Metal Gear Solid franchise, combat is said to be optional and stealth a particularly viable strategy, while the tone is believed to hew closer to the horror genre.

There have also been persistent murmurs about a social/online multiplayer aspect to the core gameplay, though Kojima has remained tight-lipped to date.

Still, between Kojima's rep for ambitious, boundary-pushing games and an A-list cast including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux and, er, Guillermo del Toro, it's easy to drink down the Kool Aid and accept that Death Stranding will be a must-play, one-of-a-kind title, eccentricities and all.

Whether it'll be a console-defining classic or not remains to be seen, but if nothing else, it surely won't be boring, right?
