8. Michael De Santa - GTA V

Rockstar protagonists tend to be young, vibrant, and generally committed to the action they're partaking in - be it a matter of choice, vengeance or survival. GTA V's Michael is totally unique in that his motivation can't be answered by any of these reasons. In fact, for much of the game, he seems to lack any sort of motivation at all. A slightly overweight ex-crook in the midst of a crippling midlife crisis, Michael is forced to contend with a bratty son, an unfaithful wife, and a lack of purpose in life. He is by far the most interesting of GTA V's three protagonists, and also acts as a crucial central figure, tying Franklin and Trevor together. Like any good protagonist, Michael also has a compelling backstory. Nine years before the events of the game, he struck a deal with the FIB to give them Trevor (and third partner Brad Snider) in exchange for a new life - and a considerable paycheque. These events have a major impact upon GTA V, and help make Michael one of the most fleshed-out characters in a Rockstar game.
