Fable Reboot Wishlist: 5 Things We Want (And 5 We Don't)
1. Don’t: Take itself too seriously
The series has always been severe, it features death, destruction, betrayal and all sorts of hideous things, yet it never felt too much because the games had a fantastic way of balancing that out with the tone and humour of the game. This comes down to more than just comedy though, this is a fundamental core of the Fable franchise, it is a game, and it knows what it needs to be, a fun tale that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Games as an art form tend to fall into the trap of feeling it is necessary to overcompensate for their medium by making their products devoid of self-awareness. In contrast, many other titles thrive off of knowing what they are and how to apply fun to the medium they are from.
Playground games cannot fall into the trap of allowing the game to think it is more significant than it is. This should be a fun, silly, goofy experience that will enable players to experience a new land, but ultimately know that they are playing something that the makers want them to enjoy.
As stated before, they seem to be going down the right track, contrasting the generic fantasy perspective with harsh reality in the trailer and we can only hope that this continues in the games final form as well.
