Fallout 76: Every Gameplay & Plot Detail You Need To Know
9. Vault 76 Is A Control Vault Set To Open 20 Years After A Nuclear War
While the teaser trailer confirmed that the 76 in the spinoff's title refers to Vault 76, the importance of the location actually runs far deeper than just this one reveal. Although it's never been accessible, references to the vault have cropped up across multiple games, and by piecing together those drops of information there's actually a lot fans already know about it.
For instance, it's already been established that, unlike the majority of the other Vault-Tech locations (which were built specifically to conduct experiments on the last remaining humans), Vault 76 was one of the few "control vaults" across the USA. This specific one was allegedly set to re-open 20 years after a nuclear war, tasking the 500 people inside with rebuilding civilisation.
So far, players haven't ever seen first-hand what these control vaults were able to accomplish - if anything. In regular vault-tech fashion, the location must be housing some kind of secret, and the 20-year timeframe is slightly off, as the trailer suggests the game takes place in 2102, but it seems as though Bethesda will be sticking to the lore established in previous games.
