Every successful team needs an anchor man. Defensive midfielders might not be the most glamorous players in the game, but they’re a vital presence, and without one, you’ll struggle to contain opposition attacks. Youri Tielemans might be FIFA 17’s best midfield technician, but he needs a real beast beside him to harness his full potential.

Manchester United’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah fits the bill. He may start at a lowly 71 overall, but Fosu-Mensah’s potential peaks at 87, and at the age of 18, he has all the time in the world. You may want to introduce him to your side gradually rather than throwing him in right away, but don’t let his overall stat fool you: Fosu-Mensah can do a job straight away.

His strength, aggression, interceptions, and tackling stats all range between 74 and 83, and great pace statistics (acceleration: 79, sprint speed: 80) mean he’s highly adept at chasing down opposing players. Fosu-Mensah needs some seasoning, absolutely, but his starting value is just £2.4m, making him one of FIFA 17’s real bargain buys.
