Final Fantasy: 25 Greatest Heroes

21. Zack (VII)

The concept of a breakout character is far more common in the world of television than games. A minor or background character that becomes popular with the audience is much easier to capitalise on in that medium, as their involvement can gradually be upped from episode to episode. In games, a prequel or sequel needs to be developed to leverage such popularity, as the story has already been finished before it becomes apparent.

Such was the necessary course of action for Zack, who was little more than a plot device in the original version of Final Fantasy VII and wasn’t even given his own character model, making use of Cloud’s with a change of hair instead. The mystery and intrigue posed by this mysterious man, whose SOLDIER identity Cloud assumed, led to fans wanting more. This in turn led to the development of Crisis Core, one of the best spin-offs in the series pantheon.

Here Zack is done justice by exploration of the memories that Cloud internalised, giving him several standout moments alongside Sephiroth as his and Cloud’s paths eventually meet.

The fact that Zack is seemingly alive in the new timeline created by the events of Remake is testament to his legacy. What part he’ll play in the new narrative remains to be seen, but he’ll certainly be elevated way above his original station by virtue of his lasting impact.
