GTA 6 Project Americas: Everything You Need To Know

8. There's Only One Playable Protagonist, And They Aren't A Woman

GTA 6
Rockstar

One of the prevailing rumours regarding GTA 6 has been that the game would retain the previous entry's focus on multiple protagonists. The two biggest ones thus far offer two competing narratives, with one maintaining a focus on dual protagonists, and the other saying Rockstar have abandoned the concept altogether.

The frustrating part is that both rumours actually sound really believable. The first posits that players will take control of one character, called Ricardo, as he performs smuggling operations for the cartel between South America and Vice City. You eventually work your way up to the top alongside another character, called Kacey - at which point new mechanics revolving around the game's economy are apparently introduced. It was previously rumoured that GTA 6 would feature the series' first playable female protagonist, but that appears to be incorrect if the latest rumours are anything to go by.

It all sounds very Scarface, and while some might consider a possible decision to backpedal on the multiple protagonists of GTA V a back step overall, it wouldn't be without its benefits, just as the decision to focus on more than one proved occasionally problematic over the course of the last story's runtime.

Either way, it seems as though Rockstar are aiming to make GTA 6's single-player as epic as possible. Whether they achieve that with just one character or more, however, remains to be seen.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
