GTA: Ranking The Soundtracks

10. Grand Theft Auto

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLsfL68sQCE As the one that started it all, the original GTA holds a very unique place in gaming history. It set its own rules in a very grim world, where the player was not handcuffed to playing the way that the developers supposedly wanted them to. Developed by DMA Design - which eventually morphed into Rockstar North - the first GTA had a beat-smashing, uptempo and funky selection of tracks. It connected supremely well to the rebellious love affair with ultra-violence that the game represented, a free-wheeling parade of hostility and disaster. There's a good bit of techno and house-style music littered throughout the soundtrack, which tends to all run together at times. It almost puts you into a sort of fugue state, where the music becomes oddly appropriate background noise. It doesn't detract from itself either, which is the remarkable thing. You'll occasionally be brought out of it by a track you didn't expect, allowing your ears a temporary reset button before things get hairy again. It's a wonderfully orchestrated selection of pieces.
