Metal Gear Solid: Ranking The Boss Battles

32. Revolver Ocelot €“ Metal Gear Solid

The Context: Solid Snake encounters the man that would develop into the entire franchise's antagonist, Revolver Ocelot, while searching for the president of ArmsTech, Kenneth Baker. He is also in an unfortunate predicament with C4 explosives strapped to him. The Fight: This fight has always felt rather comedic if anything. All it involves is the player looping around the square shaped room for however long it takes to tag Ocelot with enough pistol bullets. The only real interesting variable in the fight is that you can preemptively set off the explosives strapped to the president if you're careless. The real infamy in this fight comes from Ocelot having his arm sliced off by Gray Fox immediately following the showdown.

31. The Fury - Metal Gear Solid 3

The Context: Surprisingly, there really is not much context to this one. The Fury makes his appearance during an underground segment that takes place along the way to the Groznyj Grad base. There really is no specific plot relevance to the confrontation which is a major reason why he's so low on this list. The most interesting thing about the man is that he was the first Russian in outer space...and he's also a little insane. The Fight: The Fury stalks Big Boss with a long-reaching flamethrower, which resulted in players hiding around behind giant walls structured as a maze and taking shots whenever they could. You could also shoot some explosive barrels when he got near them, but realistically that isn't a major or unique feature for the battle. It was a fun game of cat and mouse, but that's really it.

30. Raven€™s Tank €“ Metal Gear Solid

The Context: During Snake's journey to the warhead storage facility he comes across Vulcan Raven for the first time; a hulking Shaman that is right at home with freezing temperatures. He's definitely one of the more memorable characters from MGS1, it's just that the first encounter isn't really a fight against him, but rather a tank that he and his soldiers operate. The Fight: Essentially, the fight is as simple as tossing grenades into the opening on top of the vehicle. It's an unorthodox way to take down such a thing - and even mildly amusing - but in the grand scheme of things the fight doesn't completely stand out and isn't as memorable as their encounter nearer the close of the game.
