Each character in Mortal Kombat can brutally murder his or her opponent if the player performs a specific combination of buttons in the closing seconds of the battle.

Unsurprisingly, parents and politicians were outraged by this violence. The gore looks tame by today's standards but at the time, there were very few games depicting bloodshed like this. There was such a moral panic, a Congressional hearing was held, which led to the creating of a rating system for games called the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

The outrage escalated until parents demanded for the Fatalities to be removed from the series. The creators reacted the way any rational person would; by making fun of their critics.

For the sequel, the developers added the option to end each battle with the player performing a kind gesture called a Friendship. If you wanted to show your opponent mercy after defeating them, you can offer them a gift, perform a magic trick, sign an autograph, etc.

But was the violence cut down? Hell, no! Each combatant had twice as many Fatalities this time around.

Although the Super Nintendo version of the first game had the blood censored, the gore was on full display in MKII.
