Mortal Kombat: 30 Absolute Best Easter Eggs You Need To See
22. The Blood Code! (MK1)
The number one reason why gamers wanted to play Mortal Kombat is to see blood. For many players, it was the first game they ever played to showcase blood in abundance. The gore and violence made the game so successful at the arcade, it was a guaranteed success when it was ported to consoles.
But there was a problem. Because Nintendo depicts itself as a family-friendly brand, they refused to have blood incorporated into the game. You can imagine how disappointed consumers were when they bought the game for the Super Nintendo only to learn all the blood was replaced with sweat. Not only that, the Fatalities were heavily toned down.
Blood was also seemingly absent from the Mega Drive version of the game. However, there was an easily inserted code that would allow the player to access the gore, much to the delight of players. The code you had to insert was, “ABACABB.” This combination of letters is a reference to Phil Collin's album, Abacab. (I swear that is true.)
Although SNES ports usually sold better than Mega Drive ones, the Sega version of Mortal Kombat game sold four times more than Nintendo's counterpart.
