A Shaolin warrior and ally of Liu Kang, Kung Lao introduces himself in the trailer and exhibits his fighting ability, along with his blade-brimmed hat. Let's hope it gets put to better use than just deflecting attacks, as it's most well known for slicing up his enemies either by hand or by throwing it into the ground and buzz-sawing a dude in half by dragging him groin-first through it.

Kung Lao has been a prominent fighter in the roster since MK2, and is usually depicted as a friend of Earthrealm champion Liu Kang. Though he is frequently overshadowed by his headband-wearing pal, Lao has established himself as a great fighter and his own man, characterised by his famous bladed hat. Though he doesn't need it to kick ass, it has solidified him as a popular character in the mythos.

Lore wise, Kung Lao is a descendent of the Great Kung Lao, Earthrealm's first champion of Mortal Kombat. Including this would add to the universe for newcomers and also serve to further highlight Kung Lao's prominence in the series.
