Nintendo’s 10 Biggest Failures EVER
3. The Legend Of Zelda For Philips' CD-I
Nintendo are infamous for how protective they are of their properties. This is why gamers were so confused when they allowed an obscure company, Phillips, make multiple games based on one of their most prized properties, The Legend of Zelda. Why would Nintendo do such a risky move?
Well, after Nintendo and Sony's deal to produce a console collapsed, Sony decided to create their own disc-based system. Nintendo wanted to get a leg up on their competition and so, partnered with the CD-based company, Phillips.
Because of the power of Nintendo's brand, the company believed the Philips CD-I system would wipe the floor with Sony if its games had iconic characters like Link and Zelda. As a result, Nintendo commissioned Philips to make three games based on the Legend of Zelda franchise.
Sadly, the CD-I Zelda games are considered among the worst games in history due to their appalling mechanics, game-breaking glitches, and atrocious animations.
Nintendo's partnership with Philips dissolved and the system was discontinued in 1998. The whole ordeal was such a travesty, it made Nintendo distrust producing games for a CD-based system.
Speaking of which...
