Amaterasu is the character you play as throughout Okami, fighting off hundreds of demons in order to save all of Nippon from darkness. In addition to being the savior of the land, she is also the teacher of the first brush technique, which you start out the game knowing already.

The brush technique of Sunrise is used a lot throughout the game, creating a large sun in the sky that will dispel darkness. It can also change the time of day, which is required for certain quests in the game.

The most important feature that it has however is creating sunlight in order to get rid of the darkness that surrounds the places you visit. Using the power of the sun, you are able to fight off the final boss of the game, Yami.

It is definitely useful to continue the plot of the game, however it is not as useful throughout the entirety of the game. It isn’t even usable in the sky before the saplings have blossomed, making it not too useful unless the game prompts it.
