Pokémon: 10 Craziest Evolution Methods The Games Made You Do
6. Turn Your Console Upside Down - Malamar
Be you a hardened Pokémon veteran, or someone who barely remembers the name Pikachu, there should be a fair few evolutions methods you're aware of. Evolving via levels is the most obvious, followed by giving your pet monster an evolution stone or a special item to evolve them. Generally, there are very few critters in the Pokédex that avoid these methods - and even then, the method to upgrade them is about as complicated as "train them in this one area", or "train them at night".
This is why the method to get Malamar was clearly dreamt up by someone who quite simply wanted children to suffer, because there's zero way for you to instinctively know that you need to turn the console upside down to evolve it. It's completely surreal, as you're never really told that apparently your console knows when you've decided to turn it upside down like some sort of highschool bully.
In fact, there's a good chance that many people who have Malamar have zero idea why. There's likely countless folk who accidentally turned their 3DS upside down while grabbing a cup of coffee, only to return to the game with a completely confusing surprise awaiting them.
