In the overworld, this icon denotes they've made you a gift - usually a Heart Scale, but in battle, their love benefits you twofold:

1. There's higher chance Pikachu/Eevee will shake off status effects through sheer will power alone, alongside dodging attacks at a higher rate. You'll know because a heart icon will pop above their head, and flavour text points out it was your bond that allowed this to happen, and

2. That same joy-con icon will appear. Shaking now sees Pikachu/Eevee perform a devastating one-off attack that only shows up if you've been treating them well beforehand.
