These two Pokémon are joint fourth because they share the same Gigantamax form, and also because they share the same inspiration. The raw concept for the evolution line is an apple with a worm burrowing inside of it, but why are both Flapple and Appletun part dragon?

The answer comes in part from another word that's used to describe dragons: wyrms.

Their Gigantamax form brings this full circle. Folklore is a part of all cultures, but the one that is most relevant is the Worm of Linton - a wyrm hiding in a hollowed-out hill.

The Worm of Linton is a mythical Scottish beast. The story goes that a dragon made is home just outside of the village of Linton, known as the "Worm's Den". It was said to emerge at dusk to have a feeding frenzy at the expense of the locals, including eating their crops.

There are other myths about wyrms in the UK, including the more famous Lambton Worm, but the Linton Worm has the closest link to both Pokémon.
