I'm a big sports gamer. NHL, FIFA, and MLB: The Show are all crucial to my yearly gaming enjoyment, as is the occasional mixed martial arts game when a good one comes out - as EA Sports UFC looks like it will be. That said, there's reason to think that there won't be a huge leap in what sports games can do on the PS4. FIFA 14 and Madden 25, though surely not the pinnacle of what we'll see, are basically polished PS3 versions on a new console. Plus there's historical precedent, as the jump from PS2 to PS3 basically left gameplay mechanics nearly untouched and only managed to sharpen visuals a little. As recently as 2011, incarnations of most sports games we were still dealing with limited animations and interactions on our fields of choice, something unthinkable when we entered the PS3 generation initially. While the days of seeing photorealistic athletes running wild and leaving us to wonder if we're actually watching a game on TV aren't out of reach, they're not here yet. And given the incremental buildup we've seen over the past decade or so, they won't be in this generation either.
