Capitalising on the conversations surrounding Game Pass and the "Ultimate" tier of Xbox Live that comprises all of Xbox's services in one place, GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb stated that "Xbox Live Gold is going away and playing online multiplayer will be free".

In fairness, the only reason we pay for online gaming comes from Microsoft imposing a fee for Xbox Live back in 2002. It resulted in Sony getting one up on the competition by allowing free online play on PS3 in 2006, but they too started charging at the start of the current generation.

Going forward, one company can't be seen to charge for something the other doesn't, and with Microsoft apparently removing their price tag - something that isn't required anymore, let's be honest - Sony will have to follow suit.

Whether Nintendo also does the same considering they never care what anyone is doing, will be worth keeping an eye on.
