Ranking Every Final Fantasy By Their Soundtrack
3. Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X OST: Tracks - 94, Composer(s) - Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu & Junya Nakano, Final Fantasy X HD Remaster OST: Tracks - 94, Composer(s) - Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, & Junya Nakano
Final Fantasy X marked both the series' debut on the Playstation 2 and the first time that Nobuo Uematsu opted to share composition duties on a 'main series' title, though he still took the leading role. The addition of voice acting to the series meant that music was no longer the only audio accompaniment to gameplay scenes, but he and his understudies knocked it out of the park regardless with creations that made full use of the console's enhanced sound capabilities.
The game opens with the majestic and timeless 'To Zanarkand'. This set the bar impossibly high for the rest of the soundtrack, though it mostly maintains its standard all the way through to the beautiful 'Ending Theme', a raw and emotional piece that impeccably wraps up what is perhaps the franchise's most tearjerking story. This sadness is well served elsewhere by the likes of 'A Fleeting Dream' and 'Revealed Truth'
From a character standpoint, the villainous Seymour is on the receiving end of the most (and best) themes, his initial mystery and eventual nightmare-inducing ambitions conveyed well by the likes of 'The Unsent Laugh' and 'Fight With Seymour'. From a battle standpoint, meanwhile, the highlights come from one-off encounters scored by the likes of 'Challenge', 'A Contest Of Aeons' and 'Final Battle' (though the latter pales in comparison to its prototype 'Original Sin').
Elsewhere, the addictive blitzball minigame gets a similarly addictive theme in the form of 'Blitz Off', whilst 'Otherworld' hits the mark as a metal accompaniment to the game's first cinematic.
