Ranking Every Mass Effect Squadmate Ever
8. Javik
Being DLC characters counted against Kasumi and Zaeed somewhat, but while those are superfluous (if enjoyable) add ons, Javik is essential. To fully understand the mysteries and mentality of the Prothean race, Javik simply has to be part of the Normandy’s crew and deserves his place in the top ten.
Recruiting Javik is different to the other recruitment missions in Mass Effect, seeing as you had to revive Javik from stasis. He wakes up to find he’s the only survivor from the previous Reaper extinction event, and there’s another Reaper invasion coming. Not only that, but the species who revive him were mere ‘primitives’ when he first went to sleep. When hearing about the academic exploits of the Salarians, he remarks that they ‘used to eat flies’.
The man out of time arc is played perfectly throughout the third game. He’s reminiscent of a 19th Century imperialist, of the impression that he’s better than his crewmates by birthright. He even considers other races inferior for having less eyes than his four. However, he slowly evolves to see their value as the story progresses. Shepard reliving his memories only adds to the eerie tone of the third game as well.
