3. Pro Skater 4

Fans were distraught when it was announced Pro Skater 4 would be the last in the series.

Combined with the announcement that this would be the last Tony Hawk game for the PS1, fans took it to mean the entire franchise was finished. Granted it would have been one heck of a way to go out, but that was thankfully not the case.

The game was a complete overhaul of the traditional series. Levels were no longer limited to two-minute runs and allowed the player to free-skate with no time limit. Challenges were given by NPC’s, rather than listed at the beginning of the level. Finding the NPC’s was often a challenge in itself, with the sprawling levels offering plenty of hidden locations.

The trick system also received a big update. Nearly every move received a double tap variant, offering a higher point total for more complicated tricks. New tricks were also added to create even crazier combo runs. Players now had the ability to spine transfer over back to back quarter pipes, a move that could also be used to level out in mid-air to prevent bailing.
