8. Monster Hunter Generations

It's been quite some time since a game completely engulfed me in all sorts of different systems, to the point where I completely lost track of time. Monster Hunter Generations is such a game, and with the freeform narrative of simply being one of many titular monster hunters, you're afforded the freedom to spec and upgrade your character any way you like.

The bigger the creature, the fancier the loot, and soon you'll be wearing the hides of your defeated foes as armour for bigger and more challenging bouts. All creatures can be crafted into weapons and fancy items, and that's before you start buddying up with other players for special contracts, get talking to the villagers about requests they have, decide if you want to farm-kill a particular beast for a unique goal, and so on.

Once Monster Hunter has you in its grasp, its talons go deep - thank the gaming gods then, that the sensation is one of this year's best.
