Silent Hill: 10 Reasons A Hideo Kojima Reboot Would Be Awesome

5. Kojima's Subversive Style Is Perfect

Kojima has always had a penchant for subversion. His games are often meticulously defined, with an almost broad sense of self-awareness. His creation of the character Psycho Mantis, who would use his telepathic abilities to probe your memory card and find out about your favourite games is sure enough of that. And sometimes, when it comes to horror, a good bit of subversion goes a long way in scaring you in a memorable way.

He often creates characters that exist on the border of fiction and reality. They are very unreal, yet real, and they live in a very similar style of world. While this may not seem relevant to a horror experience, I think Kojima's vision on realty vs unreality is a fantastic way to look at Silent Hill. The first game dealt with a somewhat similar presence, where the protagonist Harry Mason wondered if what he was experiencing was real. And indeed, 2001's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty took on the concept of reality vs fantasy in a brilliant way. In horror, the protagonist is often questioning what he or she is seeing, and Kojima knows how to balance on that edge of sanity perfectly. Give Kojima the keys to the Silent Hill kingdom, and you won't be disappointed in that regard.
