Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. Story, Miles & The Character Of Harlem Itself
Sadly I've never read any Miles Morales comics, but the notion I get from the character - both from Into the Spider-Verse and now the game - is that Miles and his local community are one.
Morales himself comes across a charming, squeaky-voiced wannabe hero, idolising Peter Parker's Spider-Man and getting caught up in doing the right thing. It allows all that aforementioned detail in his animation to mesh perfectly with how Nadji Jeter voices the character, and makes you punch the sky whenever anything goes just right.
The surroundings of Spanish Harlem in various story missions are wondrously done, too. It's always the case when experiencing any culture other than your own, that you don't realise how much richness there is to appreciate.
From food to flags, bilingual NPCs to intricate Xmas lights, Insomniac did a great job fleshing out how much Harlem cares about their "new Spider-Man", and how Miles wants to do right by his politician mother and best friend Ganke. It creates a feeling of belonging and camaraderie that simply isn't a part of the Peter Parker Spidey, and that's heartwarming to see.
