Star Wars Battlefront: 10 Burning Questions EA Need To Answer
7. What's All This About Vehicles Being "On Rails"?
One glaring omission from the formative videos and news was that of vehicle combat. Battlefront I took a brave step by trying to shoehorn in some of the franchise's most iconic fighters and tanks into maps that were, truth be told, just a little too small for them; but the expanse of Battlefront II and the introduction of space battles made that element of gameplay as enjoyable and important as running around with a blaster. Hopes are thus high for what III will do with the concept. Heartbreak abounds then, that thanks partly a DICE announcement and some logical deduction from the rest of the gaming world, that a number of the vehicles in Battlefront will be on rails. In short, you'll be able to get your hands on the guns, but all the movement and freedom will be left in the hands of an AI. So far it looks like at least the lumbering AT-AT will be designed this way, but if we can expect Snow Speeders, TIE Fighters and X-Wings to suffer a similar fate then there seems almost no point in putting them in the game.
