Nostalgia is a double edged sword in the Star Wars franchise. Some instalments like The Force Awakens ooze nostalgia while also being a story that works in the wider universe. The Rise of Skywalker on the other hand force feeds you nostalgia until you can no longer breathe.

Star Wars: Squadrons looks to be leaning into to familiar characters while not throwing the nostalgia in your face. This is due to the brief reveal of both Hera Syndulla and Wedge Antilles in the gameplay trailer. Hera's return is potentially the most exciting because of threads left dangling at the end of Star Wars: Rebels.

The appearance in Squadrons could give us a look into the life Hera was leading post Rebels, and maybe even an insight into the whereabouts of the other key characters. While this has been somewhat explored in the novel Alphabet Squadron, it would be a nice surprise to see whereabouts Hera is at this point in the galaxy. She is clearly a key figure of the New Republic, but we still have questions!

Wedge on the other hand is a fan favourite side character in the Rebel Alliance, perhaps one of the more crucial members. Wedge had a role in Chuck Wendig's Aftermath trilogy, but the time after the destruction of the second Death Star still has a lot of mystery. He is one of their best fighter pilots and briefly reappeared in The Rise of Skywalker.

However, we never really got much time with Wedge and this could be changed in Squadrons. Is he still a rebel hero? How will he factor into the plans of the New Republic in the long run?
