As you visit each new Kingdom, a couple of new costumes will be available for purchase at the Crazy Cap store (usually one you can buy with regular coins and one with level specific tokens).

Earlier costumes may just be themed to the area, but some include really specific references to old games. Mario’s mechanic outfit is inspired by the Famicom game 3D Hot Rally, whilst his explorer get up harkens back to Mario’s Picross on the Game Boy. There’s even a fashionable outfit in game that Mario could be seen wearing in a Japanese advert with pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Of course, better known outfits like that of Luigi, Wario and Waluigi are all there, alongside the likes of Dr Mario, but there are some pretty strange get-ups avaialble far after the credits roll. Mario can dress like a king, turn invisible or even try on Peach’s wedding dress. Nobody’s quite sure how he managed to fit in it, however.
