It’s clear to see that Super Mario Odyssey was heavily influenced and inspired by Super Mario 64, but there are a couple of little post-game surprises that top all of the other references.

When you first arrive at the Mushroom Kingdom, visiting the Crazy Cap will allow you to purchase a particularly snazzy cap and overalls combo that literally transforms Mario head to toe back to his classic N64 appearance.

This is all taken one step even further as by searching the castle grounds you can find a door leading to a near picture perfect rendition of the castle courtyard from the old game.

Unfortunately the chests and enemies (also sadly not Boos) are presented in the newer style, but everything else looks just right. The plaque on the fountain is still there too and it’s still as blurry as ever, so we’ll perhaps never truly know why L is real (2401).
