The Division 2 Review: 10 Ups & 4 Downs

4. The Plot & Characters Are Totally Forgettable

Like almost every "live service" game ever made, The Division 2's story and characters are almost completely unremarkable.

Thankfully Massive smartly hasn't placed much emphasis at all on a conventional narrative story, preferring to immerse the player through the world and "emergent gameplay", but even so, the plotting and characterisation here are hilariously piecemeal for the most part.

Even after hitting level 30 and completing the main story, I found myself hard pressed to recall a single character's name, to say nothing of a plot that never does anything interesting outside of the typical post-apocalyptic sci-fi wheelhouse.

It's lucky that the core gameplay is so strong and the sheer atmosphere is so thick, then, because as low-effort as the narrative is throughout The Division 2, it's actually not that bothersome.

Perhaps had the game forced players to sit through relentless cut-scenes after each mission, it might be somewhat more difficult to forgive (again, looking at you, Anthem).
