It's been a bit of a mixed year for sports and driving games (where the hell is the next Burnout?!), yet of all the franchises you'd expect to innovate on anything at this stage, FIFA 17 turned in a full-on narrative mode named The Journey, complete with characters, acting and everything.

Now, the base game's mechanics are as tight and time-tested as ever, but with this story-based inclusion, a ton more people were introduced to the sport of football overall.

Starting out sinking a penalty on a muddy field as a boy and flash-forwarding to a team of your choosing, EA proved that by introducing a little heart to the Beautiful Game, there's an entirely new aspect to why fans love the sport so much that's completely unrepresented in video games.
