The Last Of Us: 5 Scenes That Must Be In The Movie
3. Sarah's Death
The plot of ‘The Last of Us’ focuses on Joel’s life two decades after the loss of his daughter. If Sarah had never been taken from him on the first night of the outbreak, by a soldier given orders to terminate them both, then Joel would probably have a completely different outlook on life when we meet back with him in the present day.
It’s safe to say he would never have “been on both sides” of hunter ambushes. Joel is a man who would have done anything for his daughter, but there is no way Sarah would encourage his father to murder and loot innocent people for the sake of supplies, and I feel like Joel would have too much integrity, at least to his daughter, to lie to her about the source. So his outings with Tess would likely never have begun, considering Joel would have cared more about his daughter than to risk his life over weaponry and non-essential items.
As heart-breaking as the scene was to watch a man mourn the death of his daughter, who never even became infected, it was pivotal in setting the tone for the game and setting Joel on the path in life that led him to falling out of contact with Tommy, and to ultimately meeting Ellie as a result of a dangerous gun-retrieval mission gone awry.
The only reason this isn’t higher up on the list is because I have no doubt that this will be implemented into the film. It’s probably the only moment in the game that couldn’t be changed and still end up with a similar experience. Simply put, there’s no way this doesn’t happen in the movie.
