The Last Of Us Part 2: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
9. Owen
Owen is difficult to establish on this list. He never quite gets the complexity he needs to, the potential of his guilt over the Seraphites/WLF war and the failure of his romantic relationship with Abby are unfulfilled, yet his current dynamic with Abby leads to some of the game's finest moments. He's often a massive prick, positioned as someone who has constantly made the wrong decisions and doesn't know what to do with himself now that his future is defined for him.
Patrick Fugit captures that horror of picking the wrong woman with his immaculate vocal performance, just a desperate man who wants to reignite a relationship that he let fade out. We have seen him die at this point in the narrative, yet Fugit's work makes you want to believe that Owen and Abby will be okay together in California soon.
Their scenes together are all brilliant, with their first scene in the aquarium being particularly moving. He provides something for Abby to fight for, and the more we see of their relationship, the more intense the guilt over killing him as Ellie intensifies.
He's the perfect example of the structural shift affecting players' emotions, being the arbiter for many to start connecting and sympathising with Abby. If he'd had a little more time devoted to his specific conflicts, he'd have been even stronger.
