The Last Of Us Part 2: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
8. Jesse
Jesse is a very wholesome boy who deserved better. He is never as important as other characters, with Dina's ex never being the centre in Ellie's narrative, but he's willing to put himself at risk and eventually die for the people he loves. He's extremely charismatic and optional conversations about his mother make for some of the game's most quietly poignant moments.
Jesse is the first new character that we meet in the game, and he is a wonderful introduction to Naughty Dog's new creations. There is a warmth to his voice through Stephen Chang's excellent performance, a sense of compassion and commitment through his light hearted exchanges and emotional speeches. His shocking arrival in Seattle was immensely welcoming after major set pieces where Ellie's alone, making the combat feel more manageable and made the emptiness of Seattle's streets less isolating.
His refusal to give up Tommy for the sake of revenge, risking going through the city alone for someone he loves, is the sign that he's the most noble person in the entire game. His death is quick and designed to infect the player with shock and anger, but his spirit is still felt in the heartfelt scenes at Ellie and Dina's home, with a letter from his mother causing everyone who found it to tear up.
