The Witcher 3: 7 Book Stories All Wild Hunt Fans Should Read
5. The Last Wish
What It’s About: Dandelion unwittingly unleashes a djinn which assaults him, because the man slips into trouble with almost pathological consistency. Geralt rushes him to Rinde to get from the sole sorceress in town, Yennefer of Vengerberg.
After locating her she heals Dandelion as Geralt is taken in by her beauty. When the two cannot agree on payment, Yennefer casts a spell on Geralt to do her bidding and he ends up imprisoned. After escaping he learns Yennefer is trying to tame the djinn Geralt trapped, with disastrous consequences.
Geralt realises she cannot as the djinn is still tied to him and is awaiting his last wish. After making an unheard wish to be bound to her, Geralt and Yennefer make love in the ruins of the djinn's rampage. Romantic stuff.
Why You Should Read It: Much like how A Matter of Price explains where Geralt and Ciri began, The Last Wish does the same for Geralt and Yennefer, though in much more explicit terms.
Throughout Wild Hunt it is shown how much they matter to each other, though their relationship is clearly never smooth sailing. What makes this story especially important is the eponymous side mission in Wild Hunt, in which Yennefer wants to find another djinn to reverse the spell and see what is between the two without the magic binding them.
In short, this story affects the entirety of Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship and the course of their lives going forward.
