8 Video Game Protagonists Who Are DEFINITELY Getting Coal In Their Stockings

4. Wander - Shadow of the Colossus

It's often said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and there's perhaps no better signifier of that in video games than Shadow of the Colossus.

After all, protagonist Wander embarks on a quest to revive his fallen love Mono by agreeing to slay sixteen gigantic colossi, who are implied to be violent, monstrous entities the wider world would rather see gone.

But the fact of the matter is that the colossi are largely minding their own business until you attack them, and after defeating all sixteen of them, it's revealed that doing so has actually freed your quest-giver Dormin, a malevolent figure who the colossi were actually keeping sealed at bay.

Wander was well-meaning in attempting to save Mono, as he indeed does at the end of the game, but his tunnel vision was so overpowering that he couldn't perceive the savagery of killing sixteen mostly innocent creatures.

Granted, Wander appears to be reincarnated as a horned baby at the end of the game, which is probably a more appropriate punishment than a stocking-full of coal.
