8 Video Games That RUINED Great Characters

3. Maya - Borderlands 3

BORDERLANDS 3 MAYA

Borderlands 2 introduced one of the series' most beloved characters - Maya, a Siren whose abilities make her one of the game's most versatile Vault Hunters, and a joy to play whether you're a total newbie or toughened vet.

So fans were pissed when Maya was killed off in Borderlands 3, and while a character dying need not be an actual character assassination, in this case the circumstances of her death totally undermined who she is.

Maya perishes during a run-in with the Calypso Twins, who attack her apprentice Ava. When Maya intervenes, Troy Calypso leeches her life force and powers, causing her to disintegrate into nothing.

The entire sequence rang false for a few reasons, not least that, as a Siren, Maya should've been able to effortlessly restrain Troy from a good distance rather than get within draining distance of him.

It's as though Maya suffered some sort of head injury between games and her tactical decision making was impaired enough for her to make such a ridiculous fumble.

Otherwise you have to surmise that it's simply terrible writing intended to conveniently sweep Maya under the rug in order to further Ava's character development. Boo.
