Warhammer 40K: Which Chaos Faction Should You Pick?
3. Black Legion XVI Legion
“From shame and shadow recast. In black and gold reborn”
The Black Legion is the largest single warband in the Eye of Terra. Led by the Warmaster, Abaddon the Despoiler, they seek to overthrow the Imperium and create a new empire in their image.
After the failed attempt of their gene-father Horus Lupercal, the remains of the Sons of Horus fled into the Eye of Terra. From the ashes of his failure they re emerged, re energised under the new banner of the Black Legion.
The Black Legion encompasses all aspects of the Chaos Pantheon and members of all of the Chaotic cults flock to the Warmaster.
Positives of playstyle
Abaddon the despoiler. The Black Legion is led by the Warmaster of Chaos and he is superb on the tabletop and a complete monster in combat.
Ghorisvex's Teeth the relic chainsword of the Black Legion in conjunction with “Flames of Spite” Warlord trait makes an amazing fighty HQ for very low points.
Council of Traitors can be an easy way to make very resilient Sorcerer’s. Give your Sorcerer in Terminator Armour the Warlord Trait, Indomitable and he’ll be casting all game.
Negatives of playstyle
Unfortunately for the Black Legion, they were the testers of a more fleshed out approach to individual legions and compared to their cousin legions they feel underwhelming.
A lot of their best rules only work against the Imperium.
Their newest named character, Haarken Worldclaimer, feels out of place in the Black Legion and is overall pretty terrible.
