Why Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Is The Best Assassin's Creed

2. The Pirate Assassin, Edward Kenway

Edward James Kenway is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting, charismatic and memorable Assassins in the entire AC series. From his backstory and origins about starting out life as a privateer doing his best to provide for his betrothed love at home, to his final bow out as an awakened member of the Brotherhood, his arc is one of the most original and believable in the franchise.

Introduced as a simple pirate built for a life on the seas, Edward is all about making himself his fortunes and actually spends the majority of the game batting away James Kidd's pleas to fight for the bigger cause and join the Assassins.

He falls into the world of Assassins and Templars almost by accident, stumbling upon Duncan Walpole and stealing his identity to kick things off just for the promise of some coin. His hunt for the Observatory across the main story isn't driven by a lust for control or power, or for the pursuit of liberty or freedom, but the ability to earn his fortunes.

By the end however, he truly begins to understand the wider picture and becomes one of the most touching and tragic protagonists in the series.
