Why There's Been No Batman: Arkham For Three Years
1. Arkham Insurgency A Fake... But Not Far Off The Mark?
Next up after the Damian Wayne report came a rumour that sent every Bat-fan's tails in a spin: Batman: Arkham Insurgency.
Although the validity of said 'leak' has been called into question in the months following its initial journey through various forums, a lot of what was discussed may not be all that far off the mark. We know that Montreal are working on something Batman related, and with Rocksteady's story having ended with Arkham Knight, it makes sense to continue developing the Arkhamverse's history in a sequel to Arkham Origins - perhaps with Robin as a co-lead.
In many ways, the original 'Arkham Insurgency' post reads more like a logical prediction of where the series is heading next, rather than an out and out description of what Montreal are working on. Regardless of the intent of the source, it makes sense for the Court of Owls to take on a role as the game's main antagonists; it makes sense to introduce Robin; and it makes sense to bridge the gap between Origins and Asylum rather than to elaborate on Arkham Knight's already controversial climax.
Logically speaking, if WB Games had developed a Co-Op feature for Suicide Squad before shifting development to Justice League and then this cancelled Damian Wayne game, surely it would make sense for the feature to be retained for whatever they are working on right now? It sounds as though they've invested plenty of time in a cooperative component, and honestly, who could possibly turn down the opportunity to play as Batman and Robin?
Right now, it's a race to see who out of Montreal and Rocksteady will announce their game first. Either way, we can expect this three year wait for a new Arkham game to persist into the new year, and perhaps - unfortunately - even the one after that.
