Double Fine

So, an Industrial Age set story told via ‘silent movie’ cut-scenes and inhabited by matryoshka dolls? No, this is not your sister’s pretentious graduation project for art school, it’s an utterly charming puzzle game from Double Fine Productions.

The oddball story centres on little Charlie Blackmoore, the smallest member of a poverty-stricken family, who runs afoul of a wealthy Baron, with the little tyke charged to save the day.

As mentioned before, Charlie is not a real kid but, well…a matryoshka doll, as is everyone else in this fictionalised world. This concept leads to a compelling mechanic as Charlie is able to jump inside other dolls to take on character traits and solve a series of amusing puzzle set-pieces.

It won't put you through the mental wringer though, as you can stumble on several solutions with some rushed trail-and-error, yet all problems have a multitude of complex and varied solutions, which will leave you eager to come back and attempt different methods.

Also, it's possible to inhabit and interact with every doll in the level, leading to some hilarious situations and punchlines that will have you fine-combing each section to discover all it has stored.

Don't let its dauntingly bizarre synopsis put you off, it will only take a few minutes of gameplay to realise that this title is a warm, accessible and joyfully experience throughout its brief running time.
