10 Amazing Horror Movie Performances That Should've Won Oscars
5. James McAvoy - Split
Split marked a major return to form for director M. Night Shyamalan, and it was also his first film since The Sixth Sense - which was nominated for six Oscars - to catch even the faintest whiff of awards buzz.
James McAvoy's lead performance as Kevin Wendell Crumb, a man with dissociative identity disorder, earned rave reviews even from critics who were otherwise lukewarm on the film. Given that Crumb is shown to be living with almost two dozen other personalities throughout Split, and switches between many of them on the regular, McAvoy is tasked with swapping acting registers on a dime in order to portray these distinct "characters."
It's a phenomenal acting feat on McAvoy's part, disappearing into each separate personality and truly making them all feel unique. And yet, despite scoring near-universal praise for his outstanding work, James McAvoy picked up just a few stray nominations at lesser-known regional awards bodies - he didn't even land a Golden Globe.
Granted, McAvoy's well-noted refusal to campaign for awards likely didn't help him here, but all the same, the Academy was always going to struggle to give this one the attention it deserved.
