10 Best Performances From 2024 Horror Movies
1. Demi Moore - The Substance
And finally, this list appropriately ends with the only performance here that might actually land an Oscar nomination: Demi Moore's career-best performance in The Substance.
Did anyone expect Moore, at this seemingly comfortable, unadventurous point in her career, to star in a face-melting body-horror film? Nobody could've seen it coming, or that she'd end up giving one of the year's best performances of any kind.
As fading, middle-aged movie star Elisabeth Sparkle, Moore gives a jaw-droppingly vanity-free performance - one that commands a lot of her physically, the gross-out particulars of which shouldn't even be discussed here.
But Demi takes the assignment dead seriously, treating it like any purely straight drama she's ever starred in, and in turn wrings every last possible drop of pathos out of Elisabeth's tragic journey. Enormous credit should also go to Moore's co-star Margaret Qualley, who as Elisabeth's younger self Sue, provides the perfect mirror image for Moore to play off.
