10 Horror Movie Characters Who Deserve Their Own Spin-Off
9. Dr. Cawley - Shutter Island
Amid the likes of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and many other masterpieces, Shutter Island rarely gets the recognition it deserves as a fantastic Martin Scorsese picture. It is genuinely unsettling, without even exploring its setting as much as it could have done.
The story revolving around Leonardo DiCaprio's Andrew Laeddis is rather self-contained, but then you have Ashecliffe itself, a mental hospital isolated on an island and filled with some of the most dangerous people imaginable.
The stories that could be told of this place, either before or after Laeddis' eventual lobotomy, would make for something incredibly intriguing, and even better for having Dr. Cawley at the centre of them. Ben Kingsley is a phenomenal actor, and as both a sympathetic ear and a doctor of authority within the institute, his performance as Cawley was outstanding.
More of Kingsley in any role of his would typically be a good thing, particularly with the eerie and potentially terrifying backdrop of Ashecliffe. Hell, if Mark Ruffalo could return alongside him as Dr. Sheehan, the two could be the gateway to no end of unsettling tales from the island of which the surface has barely so far been scratched.
