10 Horror Movie Characters Who Didn't Know They Were The Monster

Now, yet another movie led by an unreliable narrator, this time in the form of Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. Adapting Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name, the legendary director managed to bring the story and its huge climactic twist to the screen in outstanding fashion.

The bulk of the story follows Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio), heading to Shutter Island to investigate a missing patient/prisoner, but with the underlying goal of finding Andrew Laeddis, the man who inadvertently set his apartment on fire and killed his wife.

This was the story audiences were fed, and for the most part there was no reason to doubt it, until the shocking moment Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) gave up on the elaborate charade he was running and confronted Daniels, who was in fact the real Andrew Laeddis. He had killed his own wife after finding that she had drowned their three children, before concocting the convoluted story that he was the hero trying to bring Dolores' (Michelle Williams) killer to justice. 

Unlike some of the other characters on this list, Laeddis did eventually confront his reality, finally acknowledging who he really was and what he had really done. However, it was easier to live with the lies, and so he continued playing as Teddy Daniels before the final shot of the film saw him led off for his lobotomy.
