Ben Wheatley’s Jason Statham-led monster movie sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, was never going to be the most serious of things. And yet it manages to have even more fun than expected, from the very first scene.

Long before we are re-introduced to Statham’s environmental hardman diver Jonas Taylor, the film opens on something we definitely weren’t expecting: one of nature’s fiercest monsters of all time, the tyrannosaurus rex.

In a silly food chain sequence, an insect is eaten by a dragonfly, which is eaten by a lizard, which is eaten by an aquatic dinosaur, only itself to be munched by the t-rex. And while the t-rex certainly seems to be the biggest bad around, it doesn’t stay this way for long. As Qui-Gon Jinn says, there’s always a bigger fish, and The Meg 2 proves him right.

The titular megalodon lurches out of the sea, crunches the dino’s skull and drags it back into the water. But how did the shark know the dinosaur was there? How was the water deep enough to accommodate something of this size? And did megalodons and t-rex even exist at the same time? All these thoughts drift away like sand on the tide as the film segues into Queen’s “Under Pressure”.
