10 Horror Movie Monsters Who Encountered Something Way Worse
5. Ghoulies - Ghoulies II (1988)
Enjoying an obscurity surpassing even Puppet Master’s, the Ghoulies films never quite managed to break free from the time of their initial run, with the last film in the series winding things up in 1994. Arriving on the Gremlins bandwagon, Ghoulies is another film stacked with lil guys who make it their mission to cause mayhem. But, unlike Gremlins, these ugly little toilet-dwelling cat-, rat- and clown-themed demons have few redeeming qualities.
The first movie establishes the monsters, setting them loose on the upmarket edge of LA, and laying a bit of mythological groundwork for their supernatural origins. Albert Band’s Ghoulies II assumes we’ve got the gist, and proceeds to have as much fun with them as possible, by taking them to the Satan's Den amusement park. Wackiness abounds.
But, although the gore-loving Ghoulies get their fill of park visitors to savage, they aren’t quite ready for the next big attraction. II sees the Ghoulies face their deadliest enemy yet: the Ghoulie Eater, summoned by carnival folks Larry and Sir Nigel Pennyweight (Damon Martin and Phil Fondacaro) to do what his name suggests. He’s human-sized, scaly, and just one evolutionary step away from the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and boy is he hungry.
