10 Horror Movie Plot Twists EVERYONE Guessed
8. Speak No Evil (2024) - The Hollywoodized Ending
Groans sounded out everywhere when it was announced that Blumhouse were developing a remake of the 2022 Danish horror-thriller Speak No Evil, which revolves around a Danish family going to stay with a Dutch family they met on holiday - with harrowing results. Blumhouse have been releasing a lot of bad movies lately, and what on earth was the point of remaking a film that's only two years old? And before anyone says "subtitles", the original film is mostly spoken in English!
Furthermore, people briskly predicted that the story would get a happier ending for the Hollywood redo. The overwhelming and gnarly bleakness of the original film, which apparently made many actors too uncomfortable to commit to be in it, seemed like something a studio horror film would shy away from.
In the end, this film did actually subvert expectations in some ways, as it's actually pretty good for the most part, and has many fantastic performances. But the ending? Yes, unfortunately, this remake couldn't quite commit to the darkness of the original film.
In both versions of the story, it is revealed that the hosts are serial killers. However, the 2022 film sees the villains murdering the Danish family and abducting their daughter, while the 2024 edition concludes with a fairly generic shoot-em-up finale that sees all of the good characters escape. Thus, the remake totally misses the point of the original story - it's a twisted satire of excessive politeness, which is what leads to the main characters losing their lives.
