10 Horror Movies That Don't Start As Horror Movies
2. Fresh
Companion isn't the only secret horror movie that begins with an adorable meet-cute in a supermarket - or as the case may be here, meat-cute.
Mimi Cave's Fresh begins as an apparent dark comedy about the horrors of modern dating, until Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones) finally meets the handsome, charming Steve (Sebastian Stan).
Most of the first act is focused explicitly on the pair's whirlwind romance, and even when Noa ends up being drugged by Steve, the tone feels more akin to a thriller than an outright, heightened horror movie. But a few scenes later, the tone shifts significantly when Steve reveals to a chained up Noa that he intends to keep her alive while surgically cutting away pieces of her body to sell to wealthy cannibals. Yup.
Even though we all know that something is going to happen eventually, did anyone have "Sebastian Stan is a secret cannibal chef" on their bingo card? Surely not.
