10 Horror Movies That Switch The Main Character Halfway

1. Martyrs

Martyrs 2008
Wild Bunch

In Martyrs, a child called Lucie escapes from an undisclosed location where she was maliciously tortured for years. After befriending young Anna at an orphanage, Lucie vows to punish the people who made her life a living hell.

As an adult, Lucie tracks down her tormentors, a seemingly regular family, and kills them with a shotgun. When their deaths bring her no peace, Lucie takes her own life, despite Anna's best efforts to save her.

Since the major conflict revolves around Lucie, her sudden exit is a massive WTF moment. Because Anna isn't as compelling, first-time viewers might think the film will take a nose-dive after she takes centre-stage.

Astonishingly, Martyrs becomes more gripping (and far more disturbing) once Lucie kicks the bucket. While Anna tries to make sense of it all, she finds herself caught in the middle of a global conspiracy. Although Lucie experienced unspeakable horrors, it is nowhere near as unsettling as what this sinister cabal has planned for Anna.

At first, it was disappointing to see Lucie bite the dust, since she was such a riveting character. However, her demise was crucial, since it opened the doorway to an even more heart-wrenching story.
